You have promoted your server to a DC, but find that when you go into server manager the alert prompting to promote the server to a DC is still there.
This seems to be a bug and there is an easy way to get around this:
- Click Server Manager
- Click the link to promote server to DC
- Wait for the process to timeout, until you receive the error below. Click show more so the error pops up in a small window.
Error determining whether the target server is already a domain controller. The target server is already a domain controller
- Click the OK button
- Click cancel button, so no windows are now showing
- Close server manager
- Open server manager and the alert should have disappeared
check the time source w32tm /query /status .
If the DC is connected properly with NTP servers in the domain then you may be screwed up with this error.
I had this, followed the above like 5 times until it cleared. Follow it exactly in the steps all the way to show more.
Checking ADSS showed the DC online and role was a writeable machine controller and I could connect with ADUC to this specific DC. But had the notification. Thanks for this post.
